Posted - 10/23/2004 : 14:38:05 Hey there. I can't really tell you how or where I got this, or I'll get in trouble. But here's a never-before-heard mp3 of Frank trying out one of his first songs... this was recorded the same year as those other rare college tracks.
Anyway, enjoy:

Posted - 11/19/2004 : 13:07:09 Just got another email from Frank Black saying, "Hey, what do people think of my awesome rarity song?" I told him so far they think it's cool, and he was like, "awesome, I can't wait to tell Kim Deal and the Pixies!" |

. . . nevertheless, within a few days of my posting this message, FB emails me to dole out the "trouble" by kindly asking that I be the messenger of the news that the recording is indeed him.
A few things - FB doesn't play solos like that, ever. Never has. Other thing - you can't fake that shitty of a voice. You can sound silly singing, but not fake some of the problems this attention starved* guy clearly exhibits. It is also weird that it seems to follow the chord progression of Modern Age somewhat. Also, FB certainly didn't have access to a 4-track recorder back when pops paid his way into a few hours in a studio, and the best known recordings of him anywhere close to the Purple Tape session are on the FBF CD, through a mono tape deck. I think this dude it riding the misinformation that somehow those four college daze tracks were done on 4-track, which is naturally bullshit. They are tape recorder or boombox at best.
I think either our friend is seriously lonely, or is one of the easiest dupes around, and a witting accomplice is manipulating him.
*Draw Attention, anyone?

Posted - 11/08/2004 : 17:09:55 You know....I cringed when I first heard this...then I chuckled, and then I caught myself humming the tune out of nowhere at work. I don't know there is something kinda infectious about it.
But I agree...sounds alot like Adam Sandler. |

Posted - 10/25/2004 : 04:28:38 That's Frank on vocals, rhythm guitar, and lead guitar at the end... he used a 4 track. He also wrote the song and lyrics. |

Posted - 10/23/2004 : 21:48:33 Mildly amusing. So Frank is doing what? Playing the second guitar at the end? 'Cos there's no way he's singing. Sounds like Adam Sandler in his not-so-funny-retard mode.
To compare this with songs like Draw Attention and Gemini is the give-away. Those are quirky. This is just lame. "Rock party, rock party" - yeah what about it? was it cool? If that's you or your mate, fair game, its better than what i would come up with but don't pass it off as Frank. |
