I went to Best Buy today and surprisingly they had frank black francis. I really like the whole design and packaging of it, nice fold out cardboard sleeve. A nice black, white, and brown color scheme.
The first cd sounds good, it's tinny and has some reverb on it from the original recording but it sounded good to me. I like hearing these songs in there stripped down form. Now that the Pixies are probably going to record a new album let's hope they re-visit Boom Chicka Boom and maybe Rock a My Soul.
What makes this package really shine is the second cd of Pale Boys material. I know that a lot of you on the board don't like this and I can understand why, it's pretty wild and different. Now I don't listen to any other music that sounds remotley like this but I absolutley love it! I think this is one of the coolest things Frank has done. I've been salivating for this kind of material. Don't get me wrong, I love the Catholics and everything country Frank does but I also really dig his early solo stuff a lot. He's been doing the Catholics type music for so long now that it's awesome to hear this multitracked weirdness. I know that the Pale Boys did most of the work on the music side but it's still awesome. I'm dying for Frank to ease his way into an album full of Man of Steel type tracks.
Hopefully after the Pixies do an album and Honeycomb (which I pray he tours for)he'll return to his original solo Frank days. I mean why not since he's basicly ditched the Catholics now?
I haven't done a sequential picture as I couldn't think of anything good, so i just included one. |

Posted - 10/13/2004 : 22:06:21 you have the best topics because of these awesome pictures that accommodate them. When I saw you created a new topic I was praying it would have a headphones picture.
I might as well recycle this picture I made. Maybe Bush was listening to Frank Black Francis...

Posted - 10/11/2004 : 08:44:13 A long time ago I worked in the music dept. (the media dept.) at Best Buy. If I remember right, we usually got some of Tuesday's new releases in Friday and then more on Monday. For something like a Frank Black album, it might be easy for someone to make the mistake. If it's the new J-Lo or Metallica, it's a lot less likely to be on the shelf early.
I think stores can pay pretty big fines (in the thousands) for putting CDs, DVDs, or video games on the shelf early. One reason why it's often taken seriously by labels is because selling stuff early takes away from the first week sales total that they pay such close attention to. |

Posted - 10/11/2004 : 08:02:28 So some stores will receive the CDs before the release date?
I remember when I tried to buy Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop at Best Buy on the day they came out, but the store didn't have them at all. On the other hand, I recently saw a copy of the new TMBG album in an FYE the day before it was supposed to be released. So I guess it varies.
The thing is, if a store gets a certain CD early, then putting it on the shelves before the release date will often work to their advantage, since there's less competition at that point. Of course, they could always get in trouble, but I don't think too many people are going to blow the whistle on them.

Posted - 10/10/2004 : 21:24:22 It sounds like this particular Best Buy broke the street date. All it takes is one employee who doesn't know any better to make the mistake of putting a CD out early.
I wouldn't go into any old Best Buy anywhere and expect to find FBF before Tuesday. |

Posted - 10/09/2004 : 21:14:07 Love the pic, thanks for the review, even though I'm sure I'll feel differently. I'm buying it for the demos, and to support Frank. I don't care for the Pale Boys work, but hey, that's just me. :) As long as Frank keeps releasing material of ANY kind, I'm grateful. He loves his fans, recording 2 albums (or 1 double album?) this year in the midst of the Pixies reunion, he knows there are those who prefer him solo.
