As it appears that, for now, Snake Oil is a iTunes only release, let's work up some proper liner notes for the more obsessed among us.

I'd eventually like to have who wrote/produced/engineered the songs, what musicians played what on it, and when/how it was originally released (if it ever was).

Please tell me any/all info i should add.

1. Take What You Want
Written by Reid Paley
Originally released on the Everything is New CD Single
Cooking Vinyl
8/4/03
2. Belle Isle
Traditional song, Arranged by Bob Dylan
Previously Unreleased
Produced by Nick Vincent
Performed by Frank Black (guitar, vocal), Scott Boutier (drums), David McCaffrey (bass), Morris Tepper (guitar, feedback)
3. Somethings

Previously Unreleased
Devil's Workshop Outtake
Produced by Frank Black and the Catholics and Ben Mumphrey
Recorded by Ben Mumphrey
Performed by Frank Black (vocals, guitar), Scott Boutier (drums, absolutely no vocals), David McCaffrey (bass, backing vocals), Dave Philips (guitar, additonal vocals)
4. The Big Hurt
Written by Wayne Shanklin
Originally released on the Dog Gone CD Single
Play It Again Sam
6/16/98
Recorded by Billy Joe Bowers
Performed by Frank Black (guitar, vocals), Scott Boutier (drums), David McCaffrey (bass, backing vocals)
5. Do Nothing
Written by Golding/Lyvnal
Originally released on the Dog Gone CD Single and the I Gotta Move CD Single
Dog Gone:
Play It Again Sam

Frank didn't write I'm goin' Down. Its by Springsteen. Its from Born in the U.S.A. I think Snake Oil is entirely covers.

"The Big Hurt" is a Del Shannon tune...not sure if he wrote it or not, though.

8. Snake Oil [released on the Nadine UK single with Nadine, Snake Oil, and Ludwidshaffen.]

"Nadine and Ludwidshaffen written by Frank Black. Published by Spime Songs. Snake Oil copyright control." [quote from liner notes from Nadine UK single]

By the way, there is no list of the individual Catholics in the liner notes, but I know Rich played on them. Dave Phillips was probably there for all of them also. I talked to Rich about all the SHOW ME YOUR TEARS single's/b-sides at one of his shows with Joshua Black Wilkins. As I recall, he said it got to the point that he and Dave were switching up lead, pedal, and piano so much that he had forgotten which instruments he was playing and which ones Dave was playing on the songs.

Quite a luxury to have in a band, I'd say...

I didn't know Sleep was a traditional song. Anyway, it first appeared on SSMVGD but was officially released on the San Francis Dam Disaster ep.

The Dog Gone single (and i'm presuming the b-sides: DO NOTHING/I'M GOIN DOWN/THE BIG HURT) was recorded by Billy Joe Bowers at Sound City and Full Blast, and players are frank, scott, dave and lyle.

'Do Nothing' written by Golding/Lynvall

edit: brian, all this info is from the Dog Gone sleeve. Lynvall is one L at the end like you have up top, but a DG single typo with 2

I'm not sure who plays what and where (regarding the dog gone single), the four names are just listed in the bottom right corner. My presumption was that because no-one else gets credit, the four songs were recorded together during the same(ish) session and by these four catholics.

I dig the 3-piece vibe on Do Nothing, The Big Hurt, and Going Down. Sounds like rock music to me.

"The Big Hurt" is sort of a pop standard performed by many people. As far as I know, there's no recognized definitive version. I have a single of "The Big Hurt" probably from the late 50s/early 60s performed by some woman named Miss Toni Fisher.

I think "Belle Isle" is a traditional folk song. Bob Dylan might credited with it on Self-Portrait, but there are few songs on that album some people argue Dylan shouldn't have taken credit for.

Thanks for the info Jason, i'll look into the Dylan thing. And as far as my research has told me, the version you speak of was the definitive "The Big Hurt" until Del Shannon recorded it.

To my ears the lead guitar on "Down in the Hole" sounds unmistakably like Rich playing, which leads me to believe its a trio of FB-Rich-McDave - anyone else agree?

Added to the Song DB, I did my best on the lyrics for Belle Isle and Somethings. Haven't done them all by any means, and any corrections feel free to list.

Hi, i've just find the lyrics of this beautiful song :

Do Nothing (Perfomed (and written?) by The Specials) :

Each Day I walk along this lonely street
Trying to find, find a future
New pair of shoes are on my feet
Cos' fashion is my only culture

Nothing ever change, oh no
Nothing ever change

People say to me just be yourself
It makes no sense to follow fashion
How could I be anybody else
I don't try, I've got no reason

Nothing ever change, oh no
Nothing ever change

I'm just living in a life without meaning
I walk and walk, do nothing
I'm just living in a life without feeling
I talk and talk, say nothing

Nothing ever change, oh no
Nothing ever change

I walk along this same old lonely street
Still trying to find, find a reason
Policeman comes and smacks me in the teeth
I don't complain, it's not my function

Nothing ever change, oh no
Nothing ever change

They're just living in a life without meaning
I walk and walk, do nothing
They're just playing in a life without thinking
They talk and talk, say nothing
I'm just living in a life without feeling
I walk and walk, I'm dreaming
I'm just living in a life without feeling
I talk and talk, say nothing
I'm just living in a life without meaning
I walk and walk, do nothing

hi,

Belle Isle Lyrics

One evening for pleasure I rambled to view
The fair fields all alone
Down by the banks of Loch Eiron
Where beauty and pleasure were known.

I spied a fair maid at her labour
Which caused me to stay for a while
And I thought of a goddess to beauty
Bloomin' bright star of Bright Isle.

I humbled myself to her beauty
"Fair maiden, where do you belong ?
Are you from heaven descended
Abiding in Cupid's fair throne ?".

"Young man, I will tell you a secret
It's true I'm a maid that is poor
And to part from my vows and my promise
Is more than my heart can endure.

Therefore I remain at my service
And go through all my hardship and toil
And wait for the lad that has left me
All alone on the banks of Belle Isle".

"Young maiden I wish not to banter
It's true I come here in disguise
I came here to fulfill our last promise
And hope to give you a surprise.

I've known you're a maid I love dearly
And you've been in my heart all the while
For me there is no other damsel
Than my bloomin' bright star of Belle Isle".
